Lamento Di Mosa Nena

The lyrics of my song, titled "Lamento Di Mosa Nena", are inspired on a poem by Pierre Lauffer. The poem tells the story Buchi Fil, a strong and proud male slave. His master and the watchmen hate him because he never bows his head acknowledging their superiority. However, they try to break him by making him work for hours and hours, hitting him, mocking him and keeping food and drink from him. But as they repeatedly fail, their efforts turn into an obsession.

Balada di Buchi Fil

Pierre A. Lauffer (1920-1981 Curaçao), is considered a pioneer in the development of Papiamentu as a literary language. He was was a prolific writer in three languages: English, Dutch, and, especially, Papiamentu. Lauffer is considered a poet laureate of Curaçao. One of his most inspiring poems "Balada di Buchi Fil" was put to music and became a popular song.

The poem tells about a strong and proud slave who goes by the name of Buchi Fil. He refuses to wear a hat, notwithstanding the tropical sun burning above, so that he does not have to take it off to greet his master. This behavior results in the wrath of his owner who does his utmost to impose respect. He hatches a plan with the head watchman to break Fil.
